The attacking nominations for the Fifa Fifpro World XI 2012 have been announced, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi leading the way.

The likes of Sergio Aguero, Edison Cavani, Radamel Falcao and Robin Van Persie have all been named amongst the 15 candidates for a place in this year's ultimate side.

Manchester City forward Mario Balotelli, Real Madrid's Karim Benzema, Brazil international Neymar and Manchester United's Wayne Rooney have also been nominated, along with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and ex-Chelsea forward Didier Drogba. Bayern Munich's Mario Gomez is also in with a chance despite missing part of the year with an injury, with Liverpool's Luis Suarez and Anzhi Makhachkala player Samuel Eto'o completing the list.

The 50,000 players who are part of the professional footballers' union Fifpro were each invited to vote in a secret ballot to nominate their peers for the World XI, choosing the best goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards from 2012.

The final World XI selection will be announced at the Ballon d'Or award ceremony on January 7, 2013.

Shortlist in full:

Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal, Real Madrid), Lionel Messi (Argentina, Barcelona), Sergio Aguero (Argentina, Manchester City), Mario Balotelli (Italy, Manchester City), Karim Benzema (France, Real Madrid) Edison Cavani Uruguay, Napoli), Dider Drogba (Cote d'Ivoire, Shanghai Shenhua) , Samuel Eto'o (Cameroon, Anzhi Makhachkala), Radamel Falcao (Colombia, Atletico Madrid), Mario Gomez (Germany, Bayern Munich), Zlatan Ibrahimvic (Sweden, Paris Saint-Germain), Neymar (Brazil, Santos), Robin Van Persie (Netherlands, Manchester United), Wayne Rooney (England, Manchester United), Luis Suarez (Uruguay, Liverpool

The 30-year-old has scored 40 times for Sporting, 40 more for Zaragoza, then 129 with Valencia, and now 39 at Barcelona, while netting 53 goals for Spain's national side.

"The 300 goals I have to my name now make me realise that I have done well over the years. It makes me proud to have scored this much and to have achieved so many goals," the Spain international was quoted as saying by AS.

"The goals you remember can be the ones that were beautiful or that were difficult. I always think about the one with my head, because those are the most difficult ones for me.

"I also have fond memories of the goal with Valencia against Deportivo, when I scored from midfield. And of course the one for Barcelona at Wembley in the Champions League."

Villa netted his 301st goal only minutes after reaching the 300 landmark.

Casillas defends Mourinho after Bernabeu whistles

Real Madrid captain and goalkeeper Iker Casillas has rallied behind Jose Mourinho after the Portuguese coach was whistled by some home fans during a Copa del Rey match at the Bernabeu.
The split over Mourinho, under pressure after his side slipped 11 points behind leaders and arch rivals Barcelona in La Liga, was evident as some supporters whistled when others chanted his name in a 3-0 second-leg win against third-tier Alcoyano that sent Real through to the last 16 7-1 on aggregate.
"I think a couple of months ago the people that were whistling yesterday were the people who were clapping and cheering when we won the league," Casillas said.
"Memories are short in football and maybe people do not remember who led the team to win the record breaking league title: most goals, most points," added the Spain international.
"We must also remember the good times and the continuity in this project, which started a long time ago, with a very young team that has been improving.
"We've won the Copa del Rey, La Liga, the (Spanish) Super Cup. This team does not want to stop and wants to achieve more."
Mourinho has a chance to win over more of the club's demanding fans when city neighbours Atletico Madrid visit the Bernabeu in La Liga on Saturday.
Atletico, resurgent under Argentine coach Diego Simeone, are second, three points behind Barca and eight ahead of third-placed Real.
"We have absolute confidence in Mourinho," Casillas said.
"He took a very young team against a team like Barcelona which was winning lots of titles and has managed to match the levels of the two teams," he added.
"Yes it may be being unfair to the coach. He arrived at a new team which was very young three years ago and I think much of Real Madrid's success has been because of him.
"Being the best coach in the world is very demanding and perhaps that's the problem that he has."

Messi hails Guardiola as the best coach in the world (©GettyImages) Messi hails Guardiola as the best coach in the world (©GettyImages) As featured on NewsNow: Football newsFootball News 24/7 Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has suggested his boss, Jose Mourinho, is the world's best coach, even ahead of the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Roberto Mancini - so, who is the current best manager in the world? The question is riddled with problems. How do you define the best coach? Most titles, most influential philosophy, most tactically astute, most domestic leagues, most Champions Leagues, perhaps even the most attacking. Ultimately, it's likely to be a combination. Sir Alex Ferguson may claim the most titles, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's the best manager in the world right now. He could have already reached his peak in his managerial career, there may be better, younger coaches more deserving of the mantle at this exact moment in time. And that's the key point - this exact moment in time. To be considered the world's best you must have demonstrated your worth in the near past. So Arsene Wenger's unique achievements with Arsenal in the late 90s and early 2000s no longer hold much weight. He very reasonably could have been the world's best in 2004 - after his side went unbeaten for an entire season - but after seven years without trophy his claim is weak. So who's is strong? Well, top of the pile must be Pep Guardiola. It's a curious phenomenon that dictates a person out of action seems to become more valuable - Jack Wilshere for Arsenal and England a recent example. And Guardiola's stock has never been higher - even though his final season at Barcelona ended in failure - in the sense they didn't win either league or cup despite possessing the best team. In four years at the Nou Camp, Pep won three La Ligas, two Copa Del Reys, two Champions Leagues, and two Club World Cups. In total, including a few minor pieces of silverware, Guardiola took home 14 trophies in four seasons. Every year he was named La Liga Coach of the Year. In Lionel Messi's own words, Guardiola "is the best coach in the world and wherever he now chooses to go he will be a success, I have no doubt about that." An endorsement from a three-time Ballon d'Or winner is influential, as much as the clamour now for his signature is flattering. No other manager has had such success in recent history. But who else deserves to be considered? Head of the queue is Jose Mourinho - the man who pipped Guardiola to the La Liga title last year. According to Cristiano Ronaldo, he's the best coach in the world, and according to the stats, the Portugal international's got a point. Two Champions League titles with two different clubs, domestic league titles in four different countries, and bettering Guardiola and the mighty Barcelona machine in La Liga. The Special One has established himself as the premier coach in every country he's managed in - and he's managed in the three biggest, England, Spain and Italy. He gets the best players to play for him, the likes of Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and John Terry at Chelsea, Diego Milito, Wesley Sneijder and Lucio at Inter Milan, and Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos and Iker Casillas at Real Madrid. He promises to return to England after he's finished at Real Madrid, but in truth, he has the pick of every club in the world - just like Guardiola. Because it's not just his record that speaks volumes, it's his character, his cult of personality that attracts the best players and moulds them into coherent, title-winning teams. Sir Alex Ferguson has done this to a similar extent at one team, building in cycles, but Mourinho has successfully exported the trick to every side he's managed. In England the candidates are few and far between. The Chelsea hot-seat has proven too fierce for even skilled tacticians like Carlo Ancelotti, while Arsene Wenger has struggled wilfully to keep pace with the big-spending top teams. Of course, there's Sir Alex Ferguson. The Manchester United manager bestrides the Premier League like a colossus. His record across the last 25 years is without parallel, and for that reason he deserves a place at the top table - perhaps even at its head. These three managers are the game's best, but each for different reasons. Guardiola for intense, unprecedented success at one club in a concentrated period of time. Mourinho for sustained success across many clubs in many countries - displaying an adaptability few else exhibit. And Ferguson for longevity, for his success at one of the world's biggest clubs, and his capacity to rebuild, rejuvenate and reinvigorate when others would walk away. How about some other contenders? The likes of Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund - back-to-back Bundesliga champions and flying top of a Champions League group including Real Madrid and Manchester City. Or perhaps Mauro Biesla at Athletic Bilbao, if not for his success, then at least in recognition of his commitment to exciting, vibrant attacking football. Fabio Capello has the pedigree, but no longer the stage, to cement his place as one of the best manager's in the world, and his legacy, in England at least, is unfairly tainted by his spell in charge of the national team. Carlo Ancelotti is another with a hugely impressive track record, and, whisper this quiety around Stamford Bridge, Rafael Benitez actually has a pretty impressive CV. Two Champions League finals with Liverpool and a couple of La Ligas with Valencia. So do you agree with Ronaldo, or perhaps you side with Messi? Or maybe Sir Alex Ferguson, or maybe even another? Who do you think is the best manager in the world at the moment? Leave your choice below...

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has suggested his boss, Jose Mourinho, is the world's best coach, even ahead of the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Roberto Mancini - so, who is the current best manager in the world?

Match Report: Newcastle 0-3 Manchester United

The visiting side put the memory of last week's 3-2 home loss to Tottenham firmly to one side when Northern Ireland defender Jonny Evans rose highest in a crowded box to power home a header from Robin van Persie's delicious corner on eight minutes.
The home side's struggles continued at corners when they shipped a second goal on 15 minutes. This time Patrice Evra was on hand to meet the outstanding Wayne Rooney's delivery in a goal of some simplicity with Newcastle marking fresh air.

Alan Pardew's team continued to toil for large swathes of the match and hopes of a comeback finally faded when Tom Cleverley tried to pick out Van Persie with a cross on 71 minutes only to see the ball sail over his United companion and the home goalkeeper Steve Harper from 30 yards out.
Cleverley looked surprised as he celebrated, but there were few surprises about the result with Sir Alex Ferguson's team running out convincing winners on a gloriously Autumnal day in Newcastle.
The home team will point to the moment Papiss Cisse headed towards a gaping net after Demba Ba beat an unconvincing visiting goalkeeper David de Gea in the air to hit the bar on 51 minutes.
Televison replays showed the ball was not over the line when De Gea threw a hand at the ball to scoop it away with the whole ball not over the line in another of those goal technology discussing moments.
United move above champions Manchester City on goal difference with 15 points from seven matches. They are only four points adrift of leaders Chelsea as they head for the international break.

Controversy reigns as Man United beat nine man Chelsea

Manchester United moved back into the title hunt with a 3-2 Premier League win at Chelsea that was marred by two poor officiating decisions.

Chelsea had fought back from 2-0 down and were in the ascendance when Ivanovic was correctly dismissed for fouling Ashley Young en route to goal.

But referee Mark Clattenburg showed Fernando Torres a second yellow card for diving when Jonny Evans caught him with a poorly-timed lunge as the Chelsea striker raced towards goal, the Spaniard apparently punished for overplaying his fall.

That error was compounded when Javier Hernandez scored the winning goal from an offside position, as the assistants failed to spot that he was behind the last defender when diverting Rafael’s cross-shot.

It was a shame that a great advertisement for the Premier League should be spoiled by poor decisions – many argue that goal-line technology in itself is not enough and that football should adopt tennis-style HawkEye challenges. On this evidence it is hard to disagree.

Before that Chelsea had done remarkably to come from behind and looked well on their way to winning it after Ramires’s header completed a comeback started by a wonderful Juan Mata free-kick.

Those goals came either side of half-time, with United having cruised ahead thanks to Robin van Persie, whose fourth-minute finish rebounded off the crossbar and in off David Luiz, with the Dutchman claiming a bona-fide goal eight minutes later when a near-identical move saw him sweep home a fine finish.

David De Gea had kept United in the reckoning with a series of fine saves from Luiz, Gary Cahill, Torres and Mata, but he was powerless to stop the former Valencia forward’s fantastic effort just before half-time.

Chelsea were dominating possession and the deservedly levelled when, after Mata did well to keep a lost cause alive, Oscar’s lofted cross was headed in by Ramires.

De Gea was earning his coin, denying another Mata effort while Eden Hazard volleyed wide from a good spot.

United were hanging on but the pendulum swung back their way when Chelsea were reduced to 10 men.

Only Ivanovic will know if he meant to bring down Young as he raced clear through the middle, but once Clattenburg decided it was a foul, the Serb had to go. He had no complaints.

Rooney spanked the resultant free-kick over the bar but, with almost half an hour remaining, there was no panic as United chased victory.

They were given another helping hand when Torres, who had been booked for a rash tackle on Tom Cleverley, was taken out by Evans, who is renowned for his desperate lunges.

Most thought Clattenburg was reaching for his cards to book the Northern Ireland defender, and most reacted with shock when he showed it to Torres, who was incredulous as he walked off.

It was now only a matter of time before United added to their tally, but even that was questionable. Cech had done brilliantly to keep out a Van Persie finish, which trickled off the post and was palmed out by the Chelsea keeper.

Rafael’s low cross shot was certainly testing but Hernandez, who had been on the goal-line challenging Cech a split-second earlier, had not got back onside when he met the Brazilian’s drive.

A glance to the assistant by the Mexican confirmed his movement had not been spotted, and he wheeled away in celebrations that saw a steward injured when fans surged forward.

It was not over, Chelsea battling gamely as they threw what few men they had forward, and United should have added to their tally but for a poor miss by Valencia.

The victory, while barely deserved, puts United back up to second, one point behind the leaders as the title race looks set to be a three-way tussle at the very least.

Man United Destroys 10-man Gunners

Robin van Persie took less than three minutes to score against Arsenal as Manchester United eased to a 2-1 Premier League win against Arsenal at Old Trafford.

Patrice Evra added a second-half header to Van Persie's early strike, while United were so comfortable that Wayne Rooney could afford to miss a penalty in first-half stoppage time.

Santi Cazorla smashed in an emphatic consolation with the last kick of the game, but by that stage Arsenal were well beaten.

Arsenal finished with 10 men after Jack Wilshere's red card for two bookable offences, while their mutinous fans reacted to a dismal performance with unflattering songs about chief executive Ivan Gazidis.

Manchester United beat 10-man Liverpool

Jonjo Shelvey was sent off for the home side towards the end of a first half they had largely controlled, but then Steven Gerrard gave the 10-man Liverpool the lead within a minute of the start of the second half.

That lead only lasted five minutes, however, before United defender Rafael equalised. The visitors then began to make their one-man advantage count and Robin van Persie gave them the lead from the penalty spot nine minutes from time.

The win is United's first at Anfield in almost five years, since Carlos Tevez scored the only goal of the game in December 2007.

Shake hands or get out, liverpool told Luis Suarez

The clubs meet at Anfield this afternoon in a highly-charged game that comes on the heels of the Hillsborough report that revealed the extent of the police smear campaign to blame Liverpool fans for the disaster, which claimed 96 lives in 1989.

Suarez has been instructed to forget about his feud with United left-back Evra. Last December he was banned for racially abusing the Frenchman, and refused to shake his hand before the clubs' subsequent meeting in February. He has been told a repeat will not be tolerated.

The Liverpool's American owners - who were embarrassed by the club's handling of the Suarez affair last season - are prepared to take extreme action if Suarez misbehaves again.

The People claims: "Liverpool owner John W Henry is set to sell Suarez in January if he refuses Evra's hand for a second time."

Liverpool to loan Didier Drogba

Liverpool are to temporarily fix their striker crisis by bringing in Didier Drogba on loan, according to Sunday's papers.

The Chinese season ends next week and The People claims that Shanghai Shenhua are willing to tear up Drogba's mammoth contract in order to free him up for a move to Anfield - on the understanding that he returns for the new season in March.

However with financial uncertainty surrounding the Chinese club which also employs Nicolas Anelka he may never return.

Drogba's family live in Surrey and, with Liverpool down to one fit striker in Luis Suarez, the giant Ivorian who served Chelsea with such distinction could be the ideal short-term fix.

Didier Drogba asks FIFA for loan move

The Chinese season has now ended while the Blues are on the brink of elimination from this season's Champions League after Tuesday evening's loss to Juventus and sacked Roberto Di Matteo on Wednesday morning.

Any temporary move to Chelsea would not see the Ivorian feature in the final match against Nordsjaelland, however, as clubs must register their squads for the group stage with UEFA before their first match.

Drogba has also been linked with a loan move to Liverpool, who have a striker crisis, while he has said he would like to return to former club Marseille one day.

We are outside the official transfer window and so Drogba would require an exemption to move. "The FIFA administration services are looking into it," the world governing body said in a statement.

FIFA has previously upheld the rules in previous cases when David Beckham, Thierry Henry and Landon Donovan were made to wait until January to make loan moves to Europe after the end of the Major League Soccer season.

Drogba appears to be keen to keep playing as the African Cup of Nations begins on January 19 in South Africa.

Should the Ivory Coast captain's request be denied, he would be eligible to join another club on loan on January 1, but that would give him little time before having to join up with the Elephants.

The Argentine has netted an impressive 82 goals since January, and needs only three more goals in 2012 to equal Gerd Muller's record of 85 goals for club and country in a calendar year.

Messi helped Barcelona to the Copa del Rey in 2011-12, while also guiding Argentina to top spot in their 2014 World Cup qualification section.

Ronaldo played a key role in Real Madrid's Liga triumph last term with his 46 league goals, and also made it to the semi-finals at Euro 2012 with Portugal.

Iniesta, meanwhile, successfully defended their European title with Spain at Euro 2012, as well as winning the Copa del Rey with Barcelona.

Messi previously won the Ballon d'Or in 2009, while also picking up the prestigious trophy in 2010 and 2011 after it merged with the Fifa World Player of the Year award.

Cristiano Ronaldo came out victorious in 2008, but had to settle for second spot in 2009 and 2011.

Iniesta finished as runner-up in 2010.

Vicente del Bosque, Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho have been nomineed for the Coach of the Year for men’s football award.

Radamel Falcao, Neymar and Miroslav Stoch are still in the running to win the Puskas award for goal of the season.

Marta, Abby Wambach and Alex Morgan are in contention for the Women’s Player of the Year award.

Bruno Bini, Norio Sasaki and Pia  Sundhage are the candidates for the Coach of the Year for women's football award.

Iniesta, Ronaldo and Messi on Ballon d'Or shortlist

Great rivals Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are joined on a three-man shortlist for the FIFA Ballon d'Or award by Andres Iniesta.

The three stars were also shortlisted for UEFA's Best Player in Europe award, won by Barcelona and Spain midfielder Iniesta after his success in inspiring his country to win Euro 2012.
However, Barca team-mate Messi is favourite to secure the FIFA award and become the first man to be named the world's greatest player for four years in succession.
Messi has scored a remarkable 82 goals for club and country in 2012 - just three short of Gerd Mueller's all-time record - and though it was Ronaldo's Real Madrid who won the Spanish title, Messi scored a barely believable 50 goals in the 2011-12 league campaign.
The Argentina forward won both the FIFA World Player of the Year and the Ballon d'Or in 2009 before then claiming the award in 2010 and 2011 when the two prizes were amalgamated.

Rafael Benitez says Fernando Torres not at Liverpool peak

Rafael Benitez admits Chelsea's Fernando Torres has not recaptured the form he showed when at Liverpool.
The Blues interim manager says Torres' performances can improve but is unsure how close to that level he can get.
Torres, 28, scored 81 goals in 142 appearances for Liverpool after being signed by Benitez in 2007, but has only got 19 since his 2011 move to Chelsea.
"It [Torres' form] is not the same now as when he was at his maximum but I think he can come back," Benitez said.
"How close? I don't know. It also depends on the rest of the team. I think he can improve but the team has to help him."
Chelsea are without a win in five league games ahead of Wednesday's meeting with local rivals Fulham.

Analysis

"It is Torres' movement that has made him such a handful when he has played as a lone frontman in the past, but against Manchester City he was completely flat.
"Chelsea were quite direct at times and some of the long balls up to him were not the best, and definitely not the sort he thrives on - those passes which let him pick up possession in the areas between the full-back and centre-back where he can be so effective."
Fernando Torres
Former Liverpool boss Benitez, who takes charge of his second Chelsea game since replacing Roberto Di Matteo last week, believes some added physicality will help Torres.
"The first thing is to give him some confidence; give him instructions of what he can do in a different way to improve him and the rest of the team a little bit physically," said Benitez.
Chelsea have managed just one clean sheet in their last 11 outings which came in Sunday's 0-0 draw with Manchester City and Benitez believes that tightening up the defence will ease pressure on Torres having to score.
The former Liverpool manager also hinted he may change the shape of the side to help them improve defensively as Chelsea have used just 19 players in the Premier League - fewer than any other team.
"When you have a striker you always think he has to score," said Benitez.
"If you can be stronger in defence, you can regain the ball easier, you have more chances because you have more possession so that is the idea.
"We try to improve them a little bit physically and the shape of the team if we can, then keep the good things that they had."
Benitez will be hoping for his first win on Wednesday as he has a battle on his hands to win over disgruntled supporters who are annoyed the Spaniard was brought in to replace Di Matteo.
The Blues' faithful made their opinions clear by booing Benitez before their draw with City, but the former Liverpool manager remains unperturbed.
"If you have a player that has not got the support of the fans what I will tell him is: 'Stay focused. Try to do your job and concentrate on your football'," he added.
"For me it is the same. I understand how the fans feel at the moment."
