Oyo and Rivers states have started off the 18th National Sports Festival tagged Eko 2012 fastest by winning a gold medal each in cycling on Tuesday.
Southwest state, Oyo was first to win a gold medal at the sports festival in the women's 200 metres race when Joke Durogbade beat Juliet Akaegbu and Clara Enadogbor of Rivers and Delta respectively, who finished second and third accordingly.
In the men's 200 metres, Edward Osim of Rivers won gold while Marvis Enoruwa of Ogun and Issa Mohammed of Kaduna picked up silver and bronze medals respectively.
The Rivers cyclist retained his title in the men's 200 metres race and is also the defending champion in three other categories in men's cycling.
The medals won in cycling came hours before Tuesday's opening ceremony of the sports festival at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
Apart from men's and women's football that kicked off on Monday, other sports are expected to commence from Wednesday till December 9.
